Why Smoke Odor Is Hard to Eliminate

Smoke contains hundreds of chemical compounds that bond to porous surfaces at a molecular level. When you smell smoke after a fire, you're detecting those compounds off-gassing from the materials they've penetrated: drywall, wood framing, insulation, carpet, fabric, and ductwork.

Airing out the property, painting over walls, or using consumer-grade deodorizers doesn't remove those compounds. It dilutes or temporarily covers them, and the odor comes back.

How We Eliminate Odor at the Source

Ozone Treatment

Ozone is a highly reactive molecule that oxidizes and neutralizes the organic compounds responsible for smoke odor. We generate ozone at levels that reach into porous materials. This requires the property to be vacated during treatment and for a period after. Done correctly, it's one of the most effective methods for severe smoke odor.

Thermal Fogging

A deodorizing agent is heated into a dry fog that penetrates the same pathways smoke traveled, reaching cavities and porous surfaces that surface treatments can't access. It's particularly effective for soft goods, carpet, and enclosed spaces.

Hydroxyl Generation

Hydroxyl generators produce radicals that neutralize odor-causing compounds in the air and on surfaces. Unlike ozone, hydroxyl treatment can be used while occupants are present, so we use it for ongoing treatment during restoration work.

Air Scrubbing

HEPA air scrubbers filter particulates, soot, and odor-causing particles from the air continuously during restoration. They're part of almost every fire restoration job we run.

Odor Removal FAQ

How do I know the odor is actually gone and not just masked?

We test using air quality monitoring and verify odor levels before closing out the job. If you can still smell it, we're not done. Masked odor returns; eliminated odor doesn't.

Does ozone treatment damage my belongings?

At the concentrations required for structural odor treatment, ozone can degrade certain materials including rubber, latex, and some electronics if they're left in the space. We identify and remove sensitive items before ozone treatment begins.

Can you eliminate odor from furniture and soft goods, or just the structure?

Both. Contents that can be treated on-site are handled with appropriate methods. Items that need more intensive treatment may be taken to our packout facility.

How long does odor removal take?

It depends on severity and the size of the affected area. A single-room ozone treatment may take 24 to 48 hours of treatment plus ventilation. Whole-structure odor remediation after a significant fire can take several days of combined methods.
